But honestly, how can you make new art without it? If you're just recycling what you've always been doing -- besides boring others -- you're boring yourself and losing that freshness and excitement that drives you to MAKE. NEW. STUFF.
I've been reading Steal Like an Artist by Austin Kleon (I got mine at Taylor Books in Charleston, West Virginia) - it's basically the I'm-not-in-school-anymore-kick-in-the-pants that I needed to remind myself to keep observing and absorbing new things.
My fiancé calls the things I collect "clutter" and "knick-knacks," but I consider them visual stimuli. In them I find beauty, or humor, or both.
I tend to be inspired by visual things, as I'm a visual learner and a visual artist, but that's not to say music and food (and 80 thousand other things) aren't valid, either. (in fact, I find cookies to be a very, very valid form of inspiration... so valid that now my mouth is watering...)
And with that, I will leave you with this video... let's just say that if Jason were Ernie and I were Cookie Monster... well, this video would be pretty darn accurate.
